I really need to get my exchange fic written. Odds are not good.

Wrote a poem:

we are tired

of the heavy places,

the deep tirades,

required graces,

every word

you ever spoke

from the day

my eyes awoke

Conlanging

I am hopelessly not up to the challenges, but I did do some work today. First, a word:

akuint • [ a.kui̯nt ] • 1. to sing, 2. to chant (a prayer or traditional song, particularly in a religious or formal ceremony), 3. to appease one more powerful with words, prayer, or song — verb

Then also, I figured out that Akachenti’s tendency to promote proximate, animate persons up a level may have come from originally have a proximate/distal distinction in second and third person pronouns and the agreement markers having merged. I’m not sure yet, but it seems more plausible than just willy nilly deciding that proximate third persons are really second persons, etc.

don't have enough energy left to write a poem today, sadly. i've been enjoying putting down recurrent thoughts of the day in poetry form.

...maybe i'll take five minutes and put down two lines, idk yet, i'm v sleepy.

i took five minutes and wrote the poetry

my plan for the next howeverlong is starting to sort itself out in my mind.

40-anime meme: Day 35

35 -- have you ever dropped an anime, if so why?

Well, yeah? Give someone enough decades -- or not that many decades, come on now -- and they're bound to hit something that doesn't actually press so many buttons.

Why? Boredom; not interested in the story; not interested in the characters; not enough time to watch it; it just wasn't engaging enough. Because I felt like it.

Shockingly this can happen and one is still an anime fan!

Something the author of this meme perhaps could not wrap their brain around? idek, oi.

Hello, I'm [archiveofourown.org profile] kadma and it takes but one gander at my profile to see I love femslash! Below, you'll find a list of my general likes and do not wants, followed by a short paragraph per fandom of prompts / suggestions, all of which are optional.

General Likes:
  • PWP / smut
  • feelings / introspection
  • missing scenes / codas
  • in-character dialog
Do-Not-Wants:
  • illegal drugs (inc. marijuana)
  • animal abuse / death
  • alpha / beta / omega and bestiality
  • bodily fluids (kink and non-kink)
  • pregnancy & kid-fic
  • first person POV
  • out of character characters
  • crossovers / aus

REQUESTS

Faking It (2014)

  • Lauren Cooper / Zita Cruz
  • Karma Ashcroft / Zita Cruz
  • Amy Raudenfeld / Reagan
I am smitten by Zita Cruz. Lauren and Zita seem so compatible to me: anything goes with these two. Banter. First kiss. Lingerie shopping. Lauren developing feelings for Zita post-canon, despite dating Liam Booker. Zita attending a class taught by Lauren on how to create a successful brand. It's all good. I also loved the fact Zita kissed Karma to see what the fuss was about, so if Zita catches Feelings for Karma, I see lots of pining and angst waiting to happen.

WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment)

  • Sasha Banks / Bayley
  • Alicia Fox / Eva Marie
  • Bayley / Carmella
  • Ember Moon / Asuka
  • Nikki Cross / Asuka
  • Ruby Riot / Nikki Cross
Bayley and Sasha have been adorably affectionate recently and they’re cute together. Alicia and Eva is a ship I discovered by writing them and their “opposites balance each other out” vibe is what I love the most. I'd love to see how a long-term arrangement plays out between them: who invites whom over to their place first, who cooks something the other is allergic to and has to spend the night at the hospital with them, who likes red wine and who likes white? Ember Moon and Asuka have a spark, which I’d love to see explored. Does Asuka really look down on Ember or is it a facade to hide her true feelings? Or, you know, smut and good sex for all these ladies is great too.

Pretty Little Liars

  • Spencer Hastings / Aria Montgomery
  • Hanna Marin / Mona Vanderwaal
For these ships, I love the idea of Spencer coming to terms with her feelings for Aria, despite Aria being in a controversial relationship with Ezra. Would she act on her feelings, or stifle those feelings by lying to herself? Hanna and Mona being adorable girlfriends in the wake of Alison’s disappearance is a scenario I love. Anything that shows the intimacy of their relationship from either party’s eyes would be wonderful. Also, angst awaits the reveal of Mona as the original A and her reasons for targeting all the Liars!

H2O: Just Add Water

  • Cleo Sertori / Rikki Chadwick
  • Bella Hartley / Cleo Sertori
  • Emma Gilbert / Cleo Sertori
  • Rikki Chadwick / Bella Hartley
  • Rikki Chadwick / Emma Gilbert
Post-series introspection and relationship dynamics between these characters are some of my favorite things. Rikki developing feelings for Cleo after Emma leaves, as an unhealthy coping mechanism. Bella looking up to Rikki as a successful woman (and mermaid!) and attempting to ask her out, only to be thwarted by Shenanigans. Emma and Cleo’s years together as close friends: first hand-hold, first sleepover, first kiss.

Fresh Off The Boat

  • Honey / Jessica Huang
Honey and Jessica have such a wonderful friendship in the show, so I’d love to see the scales tip towards romance. Some ideas: Honey developing a crush on Jessica but convincing herself it’s only a very, very, very deep friendship, Jessica drunkenly confessing to Honey how pretty she is, and how her lips look so soft. Honey and Jessica holding hands or singing duets in an alternate universe where there are no families, no men or boys holding them back. Jessica giving Honey a massage and marvelling at how lovely her skin is. Honey proving to Jessica that her favourite hangout is a gay bar by kissing her, to the cheers of the regulars.

Hopefully, these prompts gave you an idea of what sort of stuff I like. Happy femslashing! <3

This goes into the history of the Klan in US politics and it's amazing. Truly freaky photos I have never seen before of tens of thousands of KKK members marching in DC in the 20s.

(What I knew about this before watching the segment: "Al Smith was the Catholic governor of New York who split with FDR and was from LES" and the only reason I knew that was because of [profile] muccamuck talking about their historical Cap fic research)

And then she did a great interview with Carol Anderson, author of White Rage: The Unspoken Truth of Our Racial Divide, which is amazing.

Anderson's original article in WaPo in 2014 about Ferguson and the backlash of white rage

America is hooked on the drug of white supremacy. We're paying for that today

What I've Finished Reading

I was surprised by how much I liked When Worlds Collide by the end. I don't like elite secret cabals with secret mineshaft plans and mandatory breeding programs, and I didn't like that the only named female character (who is inordinately excited about the mandatory breeding program) was called Eve, because really? But I loved the scenes of global destruction, and I loved the too-brief glimpses of humanity's new home - with its green sky and ancient roads. On the last night in New York before the evacuation to the interior, the scientists of the cabal watch from the rooftop of their skyscraper as the tide rises through the streets of Manhattan in "the baleful moonlight of the Bronson Bodies," the twin planets that are about to rip Earth apart and knock it out of orbit.

"There are people down there, wading in the street!. . . Why did they stay? They've been warned enough."

"Why did we stay? We gave the warning."

"We've business here."

"So had they - they supposed, and as important to them as we imagined ours to be to us."

The first pass of the Bronson Bodies is catastrophic; the next will destroy the Earth completely. Can our secret cabal invent rocketry and build a spaceship in time to emigrate to its new home? They can! but not before a bunch of non-cabal randos try to tear down their facility, kill a bunch of scientist, and are gunned down in their turn. This is just one of the reasons why you shouldn't have secret survival cabals! Then a couple of kids wander in at the last minute and the cabal survivors say, "What the hell, we'll take these kids." Then a French physicist bangs on the door of the ship and they say, "What the hell," again. There are wonderful descriptions of acceleration pressure and weightlessness, and when the ship lands everyone tumbles out to look at the green sky. "There would be no more human beings who wrote poetry about a blue sky." And there we leave them, with their dazed cows and their hopes, in the ruins of a civilization conveniently eradicated by the vacuum of space.

What I'm Reading Now

How To Write With the Skill of a Master and the Genius of a Child by Marshall J. Cook. One of the last of the many, many "how to write" books donated to the used bookstore, back when there was a local used bookstore - part of a massive single-donor dump that was half books on libertarianism, half writing books. I kept this one because of the confident title, and I like the underlying gimmick (defamiliarization + careful editing = something interesting, probably) but I may be too much of a snob to benefit from it. What happened was that early in Chapter 2, Cook cited Shakespeare as an innovative writer who has stolen all the good stuff, then gave a couple of pearls from Polonius' cliche necklace as examples of "the good stuff." Nearly all the other examples in the book are from movies and TV. Is this a test? Clearly, I have to rise above this obvious snob bait in order to prove myself worthy of instruction.

What I Might Read Next

I'm not sure! Maybe Less than Angels by Barbara Pym?

I feel like I've done a million things. I have done a *lot* of things - work has been very busy, mostly playing catch up with reports. Surprise! Overdue reports! Ones that other people (guess who) were meant to complete and just decided not to, I guess?

Anyway. I can't complain about being bored, certainly.

I wound my walnut yarn and got the ball started for my larp shawl. I still need to mend my larp *shirt* since I did not get a new one made yet. I had visions of setting up downstairs after the kids were in bed to iron and cut and... lol no.

My phone is having Issues. It suddenly hates running Pokemo Go ;_; I am not sure what the problem is as it happened suddenly and not directly after any particular change. I can get ti to open once, and then it crashes and I can;t see any of my apps either on my...desktop? whatever you call that, or if I pull up the apps menu. If I go into settings I can open them from there. I sort of suspect my SD card might be partly to blame, as it has been having issues anyway, so I ordered a new one, along with some new charge cords of various lengths. I need to get stuff off my phone onto my external drive..... I'd meant to do that tonight and forgotten, but I guess I can take the external to work and set it up tomorrow :p

I watched the Vice footage from Charlottesville and it was so awful it completely ate my energy reserves for dealing with SJ stuff for the night, which resulted in me blocking stuff I would usually ignore or try to gently correct. Now I wonder whether, if you block all the horrible pages people share things from, you will wind up with a really warped perspective of who they are. Edit your friends into acceptability?

Anyway, there is a solidarity thing tomorrow evening downtown, and I might go after I deal with dinner, dogs, etc, but by then it will have been going on for an hour and I am not sure how long it is meant to last? Also I do still need to mend my larp shirt. And find a new cord to lace my bodice, I guess :/

I'm sure, as always, I had other things to say. But at least this is a post, before midnight, and fairly substantial! I'm still going to bed now, though

Write a poem about

“All the toil / All in vain / Every image of ourselves that we create” — “Not to Us” by Nichole Nordeman

Poems do not have to match the prompt exactly. Prompts are only meant to inspire and be a jumping off point for your own creativity.

Poems can be posted in the comments directly or linked to your own journal.

(i really like this mood)

if anyone's curious about the post titles, they tend to be lyrics from a song i'm listening to, typically the song that i put in the current music section below. sometimes they're not. sometimes it's hard to tell if you're not in my brain, but well. that's me.

I have fallen under the Indie Slush Pile, and I can't get up.

Rec me!

What I am looking for:

1) Not tradpub (Edit: This one and #4 are the only non-negotiable ones, see my reasons in comments; #2 can extend to SF or any similar genre, but I don't read many mysteries or much contemporary)
2) Fantasy - sword and sorcery or some other action sub-genre preferred over politics
3) Prefer a female main character
4) Competent writing, for the love of all the gods

I am honestly starting to think it's not possible to have a well-developed independently published story. Please show me I'm wrong.

I said i wasn't going to be signing up for any more fannish exchanges, but I have changed my mind for [community profile] lionswap for one very specific reason, having debated over it briefly and being somewhat tempted beforehand.

And that reason has the same effect, really, as waving a red flag in front of a bull, ha -- because you know what's not on, folks? Seeing someone be such a miserable, petty jerk as to say that even having to lay eyes on requests (or was it actual gifts? I'm too lazy to go check again and it doesn't really matter anyway) for other Voltron series that aren't LD would just ruin~ the experience for them. No, they would want the unsullied purity~ of an LD-exclusive exchange.

Well, I sure as fuck wasn't about to let that go unchallenged after the exchange mod confirmed a pan-franchise exchange was go.

But not to worry! I do indeed sign up in good faith nonetheless <3 With multiple iterations, even, and that's going to include LD.

Some of us know how to share ;3

34 -- have you ever watched an anime only because you liked a specific character?

I've certainly continued an anime only because of a certain character or characters, tekketsu being the most recent example -- while still fond of Eugene and Shino, frex, they weren't enough for me to bother with S2 after the end events of S1. Not, that is, until a certain body was heard to speak and then I had a reason again just to find out why, and it all fell out quite~ nicely ;3~

In all seriousness, though, if you aren't watching a series/reading a book/playing a game because there's a character you like (or a setting you like, or etc) ... then why the hell are you bothering?

And then of course

There are the books where chapter 1 feels like the DM is setting up the campaign world for you. *sigh*

Is the current trend in YA really the "I am incompetent at everything and also clueless about my surroundings" character? Or is this just people trying to ape Harry Potter without going the necessary step of putting their MC in a world they genuinely have no way of knowing anything about?
